Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), also known as thyrotropin or thyrotrophin, is a hormone that controls the way other hormones function. Basically, it stimulates the production of two main hormones, T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine), hence its name: thyroid-stimulating hormone. Without TSH, the whole system can’t properly function.
Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is an enzyme normally found in the thyroid gland. TPO plays an important role in the production of thyroid hormones. A TPO test detects antibodies against TPO in the blood.
This test measures the level of triiodothyronine (T3) in your blood Free T3 is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Levels of this fluctuate when individuals have an under or overactive thyroid gland.
Free T4 is the predominant hormone produced by the thyroid gland. This test measures the level of T4 in blood. Too much or too little T4 can indicate thyroid disease.
